Take the Stress Out of Irregular Income with This Budget Planner
Managing an irregular income can feel like trying to predict the weather a year in advance—challenging and often frustrating. If you or someone in your household relies on commissions, freelance gigs, or other unpredictable income sources, this personal budget planning tool is here to help. Designed specifically for irregular income, this spreadsheet offers a clear, month-by-month way to track your earnings, expenses, and savings goals, so you’re never left wondering, “Can I afford this?”
Why This Planner Works
Instead of guessing what your budget looks like every month, this tool allows you to plan ahead. It’s straightforward: you input your monthly take-home pay (after deductions, not gross income) and categorize your expenses. From home repairs to dog grooming, health/beauty expenses to car maintenance, everything can be planned and tracked.
For example, my husband’s income includes a significant portion from commissions. By projecting his sales and planning our budget in advance, we’ve been able to:
Increase contributions to our 401(k)
Add payments for a future home improvement loan
Avoid financial stress during slower months
And most importantly, we can plan our vacation expenses so we get that valuable travel into our year.
This planner helps us allocate money for recurring expenses and savings while keeping an eye on those one-time costs like vacations or unexpected repairs.
How It Works
The spreadsheet includes:
Template Tab: This is the heart of the planner. It’s both the instructions and the template for inputting your income and expenses. You’ll enter details like salary (net pay), loan payments, and categories for expenses. The data then flows into the monthly tabs. If you’re not familiar with Excel, don’t worry! Each row has simple labels, and you only need to type numbers into the matching cells. The instructions are there to guide you.
Monthly Tabs: Each month gets its own tab, making it easy to track spending in real-time and adjust as needed. If your income changes—for instance, if you close a big sale or take time off—you can update the numbers and immediately see how it impacts your overall plan. Simply look for the matching categories from the Template tab to keep things consistent.
Yearly Summary (Optional): For those who want a bird’s-eye view, the yearly tabs (2024 and 2025) summarize your data, giving you a clear picture of your financial health. You don’t have to do anything here—it’s all automated!
How to Use It
Start with the Template Tab. Input all your regular expenses: housing, utilities, car payment, groceries, and more. Don’t forget to add line items for savings, repairs, and personal priorities like gym memberships or hobbies. If you’re not sure how to add a new line, look for the existing rows and copy their format by typing in your own details.
For irregular expenses, like vacations or home projects, add placeholders to plan ahead. This might look like entering an estimated cost in the appropriate month—you can always adjust it later.
Update the monthly tabs as your income fluctuates. Got a raise or a larger-than-expected commission check? Adjust your numbers and decide where to allocate the extra funds. Just click on the matching category and update the numbers—it’s that easy.
You can make changes directly in the monthly tabs to adjust for unique situations, but be aware that these edits won’t automatically update based on the Template tab anymore. Think of it as breaking the link to the original setup.
At the end of each month, override the "liquid funds" cell in the monthly tab with the actual amount of money you have, including savings and cash on hand. This ensures you get the full picture of your financial situation moving forward.
Real-Life Scenarios
Want to know if you can finally remodel the kitchen? Add the estimated loan payment to your monthly expenses. Thinking about increasing your 401(k) contributions? Reduce your take-home pay in the planner and see if it still covers your needs.
Here’s an example: Last year, we added a $500/month placeholder for unexpected home repairs. When the water heater decided to quit, we didn’t panic—the money was already accounted for. That’s the peace of mind this planner provides.
Make It Your Own
The spreadsheet already includes common expense categories, but you can easily customize it to fit your life. Whether you’re saving for a big trip, managing a growing family, or planning for retirement, this tool adapts to you.
