Why I Wrote a Children’s Book About the St. Anthony Hotel
The St. Anthony Hotel has stood proudly in San Antonio for over 115 years, playing a vital role in the city’s history and cultural tapestry. When I decided to write The Magical History Adventures of the St. Anthony Hotel, my goal was to create more than just a children’s book. I wanted to craft an experience—a connection that transcends time, place, and generations.
Bringing History to Life
This hotel has witnessed the evolution of San Antonio, from its early days to the vibrant city it is today. Every corner holds a story, every room whispers of its past, and every guest becomes part of its narrative. But how do you share this rich heritage with the youngest visitors? By weaving it into an enchanting adventure that invites them to explore the past while being fully immersed in the present.
Through Rhett, the book’s curious young protagonist, and Monarch, the wise eagle guardian, children are transported to pivotal moments in history—from the early days of Samuel Maverick’s land to the creation of Southwest Airlines in the St. Anthony Club. Each chapter is a time-traveling journey, blending education with imagination and inviting children to see themselves as part of the story.
An Interactive Adventure
In addition to being a storybook, I wanted the book to serve as an interactive scavenger hunt, encouraging kids to explore the hotel and even the city itself. Imagine children clutching their copy of the book, searching for places like the Anacacho Ballroom or the St. Anthony Club, where pivotal scenes in the story unfolded. Beyond the hotel, they can visit iconic landmarks like the Alamo, making history come alive in a tangible, unforgettable way.
This scavenger hunt not only enhances their stay but also connects them deeply to San Antonio’s history. It gives families an engaging activity to share while fostering a sense of discovery and adventure.
Emotional Connection to Guests
One of my primary goals was to create an emotional bond between families and the hotel. A memorable stay isn’t just about luxurious rooms or exceptional service; it’s about the little touches that make guests feel connected. By giving kids an adventure they can dive into and a coloring book to keep them engaged, I wanted to ensure that children felt included and valued during their visit.
For parents, this creates a ripple effect. When their children light up with excitement about a place, it leaves a lasting impression. It’s no longer just a hotel; it becomes part of their family story—a destination they’ll remember fondly and want to revisit.
Planting the Seeds for Future Generations
While writing this book, I thought about the long-term impact. Children who connect emotionally with a place are more likely to return as adults, bringing their own families to relive cherished memories. They’ll remember the sense of wonder they felt as kids and want to share it with others.
By sparking that connection early, I hoped to nurture future generations of St. Anthony guests—building a legacy that continues to grow alongside the hotel’s history.
A Creative Way to Enrich the Guest Experience
The Magical History Adventures of the St. Anthony Hotel is more than a story—it’s a keepsake and an invitation to explore. Whether kids take it home, enjoy it during their stay, or use it to guide a scavenger hunt through the hotel and city, it keeps the St. Anthony’s magic alive long after checkout. By giving families something to talk about, laugh over, and discover together, it enhances their experience and strengthens their bond with the St. Anthony.
Writing this book was a labor of love, inspired by my deep appreciation for the St. Anthony’s place in San Antonio’s story. I hope it inspires children and their families to explore history, cherish their stay, and feel like an integral part of the hotel’s legacy.
